Q: How do you feel about being selected to participate in Colorado Independent Women of Film?
MC: Colorado Independent Woman of Film is a supportive place for woman to express their skills and share their ideas and creativity in a industry notoriously male dominated. It’s a pleasure and an honor to be involved.
Q: What are your hopes for the event?
MC: I hope that Colorado Independent Woman of Film continues this year to expand the notions of what woman are capable of, on screen as well as behind the scenes, locally, nationally and worldwide.
Q: How important is it to focus on regional women filmmakers?
MC: It was thanks to encouragement from local film community members like those at Colorado Independent Woman of Film that gave me the push and desire to direct the short film Juice showing this year. After 12 years of film work, I FINALLY directed my own short film! Liberating! Now I’m ready for the next one (or several)!
Q: Who would enjoy attending the festival? Is it just for the filmmaking community, or is there a reason why non-filmmakers should attend?
MC: Film is entertainment, anyone wanting to be entertained will enjoy Colorado Woman of Film not just filmmakers. Not only that, but perhaps attendees will be moved or surprised or laugh out loud, AND get to meet some great woman of film that live and work right here in Colorado!
Q: This is the 4th year of CIWF. What’s been the best part/a favorite memory of the festival in years past?
MC: I only discovered Colorado Woman of Film last year sadly. I enjoyed it very much and am excited to see more and more woman involved in making high quality work every year and show their work here.
Q: We hold CIWF at The Bug Theatre. Why is The Bug a great home for this event?
MC: I LOVE The Bug Theater! Not only is the location comfortable and intimate with good screen and sound, it also is associated and run by the nicest most supportive people in town (possibly in the whole industry)!
Q: Tell me briefly about yourself and your film/project.
MC: “Monster” Midian Crosby and her husband Joshua Adams own Denver’s award winning practical special effects and makeup company MONSTER MAKEUP FX. Midian directed JUICE at the end of 2013, as a contest entry, and well… “because we COULD”. “We know some of the best people in Denver film and are proud of our little horror story.” Midian also designed and made the creature and prosthetic makeup used in JUICE.
Q: Where can people go to find out more about you and your work?
Q: Is there anything you’d like to say about Colorado Independent Women of Film?
MC: Let’s do this!
Juice will screen Saturday, August 16th at 8:00 p.m. at The Bug Theatre. Midian will also be hosting a panel Saturday at 4:00 p.m. called “Women and Special Effects with “Monster” Midian Crosby”. Details on the panel are below.
Saturday at 4:00p.m. – Women and Special Effects with “Monster” Midian Crosby
It seems like a lot more woman want to be special effects artists these days, with shows like Face Off, interest in the subject has drastically increased. It is still overwhelmingly male dominated as is the entertainment industry in general. What does this mean to those starting or struggling with being a woman in today’s market? “Monster” Midian Crosby was one of only a handful of woman learning the subject in school over a decade ago and after years of industry work experience now owns Monster Makeup FX an award winning special effects and makeup studio right here in Denver. She will share her experiences and advice and will answer your questions in this one hour event.
